Do You Have the Right Insurance?
Homeowners insurance and landlord insurance may seem similar, but they're designed for different situations. While both protect the property, liability, and certain medical expenses, the coverage beyond that can be very different. Understanding those differences helps you choose the right policy.
Here's a quick side by side comparison:
Homeowners Insurance:
Loss of Use: Pays for hotel stays or temporary housing if your home is damaged and you can’t live in it.
Personal Property: Covers your belongings, furniture, clothing, electronics, often up to 50% of your home’s value.
Landlord Insurance:
Loss of Use: Reimburses lost rental income while property is being repaired. Often called “fair rental value.”
Personal Property: Covers the building only. Does not cover your items or your tenant’s belongings. Tenants need their own renter’s policy.
