Fireworks Destinations in Richmond!
It's almost that time - and if you're a planner like me, you already want to know where you're going to be on the 4th of July! If not, I've done some of the scouting work for you if you want to catch fireworks! Enjoy a wonderful holiday celebrating our Independence Day!
Libby Hill Park
This Church Hill gem offers one of the most iconic views of the city – it's actually where Richmond got its name! From here, you can see the downtown skyline, the river, and beyond. On the 4th of July, locals arrive early with blankets and lawn chairs to grab a spot. Parking is tight, so plan to walk a bit – but the view is 100% worth it.
Dogwood Dell
Tucked right behind The Carillon in Byrd Park, Dogwood Dell is known for its community vibe and summer concert series. On the 4th, it transforms into a patriotic hotspot with a full symphony performance followed by fireworks. If you go, bring bug spray and a flashlight – the post-show walk back to your car gets dark fast!
Belle Isle
Looking for something a little more off the beaten path? Belle Isle gives you front-row views of the fireworks from across the James, framed by the river’s rocks and the roar of the rapids. It’s a short hike in (so bring good shoes and a headlamp for after-dark), but for adventurous locals, it’s a favorite. Bonus: you can catch reflections of the fireworks on the water.
Byrd Park
Right in the heart of the city, Byrd Park is perfect for families looking to spread out a blanket by Swan Lake or Shields Lake. Kids love feeding the ducks while waiting for the show to start. It’s also close enough to Dogwood Dell that you might hear some of the music drifting over during the display.
Maymont
If you want a more serene experience, Maymont’s rolling hills and gardens make for a romantic setting to take in the fireworks. While they don’t always host an official display, you can often see nearby fireworks from the grounds – and it's less crowded than some of the other city spots. Pack a picnic and enjoy the view from one of the hilltops near the Japanese Garden.
Kings Dominion
Up in Doswell, Kings Dominion goes all-out for fireworks on major summer holidays – especially the 4th of July and Memorial Day. The show is huge and choreographed to music, and you can watch it from inside the park or from the parking lot if you're just coming for the fireworks. Pro tip: if you’re inside the park, the best views are near the Eiffel Tower or The Grove.
Richmond Flying Squirrels Game
Nothing says summer in Richmond like a Squirrels game followed by fireworks at The Diamond, and this is your last chance at the original site before renovations begin! The team usually schedules post-game shows on weekends and holidays – and they don’t hold back. You’ll get a great view from anywhere in the stadium, and kids love the fun, family-friendly energy. These shows are worth the ticket!
